Canada's largest public companies are paying more attention to carbon management. Canada in the middle of the pack in many areas, but Canadian companies rank below global average in terms of perception of carbon regulation as an opportunity, rather than a risk.

A new report from EIRIS finds that reporting and short-term reduction targets are comparable to global peers, but that North American companies lag in third-party vertification and linking executive compensation to emissions reduction.

Gary Hawton, CEO of Meritas Mutual Funds, and Stephen Griggs, executive director of the Canadian Coalition for Good Governance, discuss how some of Canada's major public companies have agreed to shareholder advice on executive compensation, and its potential impact on pay globally. Meritas championed the so-called, "Say on Pay" issue for the SRI industry. Griggs spoke in Toronto at the TMX Media Centre. Hawton spoke in Kitchener, Ont.

Here is what's percolating at the SIO!

This section showcases some of what we're working on at the SIO.

SIO Annual General Meeting
All members of the SIO and the general public are invited to attend the 2009 Annual General Meeting of the SIO. The meeting will be held:

Hyatt Regency Toronto

meeting 9am - 10:30am

This year's meeting features a progress report on SIO's Three-Year Workplan, including new initiatives concerning advisor education, foundations and endowments and pension plans.

As well, the Board will present the second and final phase of its proposed bylaw amendments to modernize SIO's bylaws. This will enable SIO to open board nominations and implement a proxy voting procedure for all members in time for the next interim annual general meeting, scheduled for June 2010. The date of the annual meeting is being changed from November to June because of the upcoming change in our fiscal year, as approved by the Board of Directors.
