Me in Brief

I am employed at the University of British Columbia (UBC) Faculty of a Law as a Professor and Canada Research Chair in Environmental Law and Sustainability. I have previously held academic positions at law faculties at York University, the University of Manchester and the University of Auckland. I was educated at Macquarie University (BA, LLB) and the Australian National University (PhD). Before academia, I worked briefly with the National Parks and Wildlife Service in Australia, and did some consultancy work for the IUCN in Nepal and Kenya.

My research in recent years has focused on socially responsible investing (SRI) and the law, especially fiduciary law. My scholarship also includes Aboriginal peoples and the environment, and climate change law. My recent publications include the books Responsible Investing and Fiduciary Law (Routledge, 2013), Local Climate Change Law (Edward Elgar, 2012), Indigenous Peoples and the Law (Hart Publishing, 2009), Socially Responsible Investment Law (Oxford University Press, 2008), and Environmental Law for Sustainability (Hart Publishing, 2006). In 2010, I was an inaugural winner of the Research Excellence Prize of the UN Principles for Responsible Investment Academic Network, and in 2012 I was the joint winner of the Senior Scholar Prize of the IUCN Academy of Environmental Law.
