Me in Brief

Hilary Martin joined CBERN in 2006, working as a research assistant for 2 years while pursuing full-time studies as a graduate student in Philosophy at York University. She completed her undergraduate education at Mount Allison University (BA English & Religious Studies 1996; BA Hons. Philosophy 1998), and received her MA in Philosophy from York University in 2007.

She's currently a part-time PhD student at York University doing research in philosophy of language and pragmatism. Her thesis draws on social science methods and develops a case study in social entrepreneurship to critique and suggest ways to improve Hu Price's theory of truth and meaning.

Her work with CBERN has put her in touch with theories and methods of knowledge mobilization and translation, as well as multi-stakeholder, cross-disciplinary and cross-sectoral dialogue. She has worked with CBERN staff, members and partners since 2010 to design PhD Cluster Research Meetings and Research Incubators, as well as the Research Snapshot and online engagement program at CBERN. These activities create fresh ways to engage with ideas and challenges in business and economic ethics, supporting both research and communities of practice. This work has influenced her own academic research on the role of language in human action.

In 2002 she completed the Alternative Dispute Resolution training requirements for roster mediation in Ontario. She has served as a director on 5 different non-profit arts organization boards over the past 15 years. Before returning to academia she worked for 2 years as Office and Acting General Manager for the Hillside Festival in Guelph. ON, and for 3 years as a stone masonry apprentice in Toronto.
