Me in Brief

Jack Quarter is Principal Investigator for the Community University Research Alliance on the social economy of Southern Ontario, is a professor at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto, specializing in the study of non-profits, co-operatives, workplace democracy, social investment, and community development.

His recent books include: as co-editor and contributor with Isla Carmichael, Money on the line: Workers’ capital in Canada (Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives; 2003) with Laurie Mook and Betty Jane Richmond, What counts: Social accounting for non-profits and cooperatives (Prentice Hall, 2002); Beyond the bottom line: Socially innovative business owners (Greenwood/Quorum; 2000); with Uriel Leviatan and Hugh Oliver, Crisis in the Israeli Kittubtz (Greenwood/Praeger; 1998); with Paul Wilkinson, Building a Community Controlled Economy: The Evangeline co-operative experience (University of Toronto Press, 1996); Crossing the Line: Unionized employee ownership and investment funds (James Lorimer; 1995); and Canada’s Social Economy (James Lorimer; 1993).

His current research is on calculating the value of added of volunteer contributions in non-profits, the social investment of union-based pension funds, and the conversion of public housing to non-market co-operatives.
