Abstract / DescriptionThis paper explores social finance with the understanding that investors who seek both financial and social returns are the primary actors and the object of investment can range from social enterprises to for-profit businesses as long as those enterprises offer both financial and deliberate positive social and/or environmental outcomes. The paper is laid out in the following manner. The next section provides a review of the literature on social finance detailing the structure of the social capital marketplace in Canada. It offers an overview of its actors on both the supply of capital and the demand for capital. It looks at investment products and intermediaries. The third section of the paper explores the motivation of social finance investors and examines some of the barriers to this type of investment in Canada. The fourth section is drawn from a series of interviews with both main stream and social finance investors on their understanding of social finance and its potential. The fifth section of the paper describes a number of social finance opportunities going forward. We conclude with some final thoughts and implications for social finance in Canada going forward.
