Me in Brief

Bridges Social Development is a registered Canadian charity operating in the Middle East and Africa. Our Canadian volunteers donate their time and expertise - and through compassionate sharing of know-how - we provide leadership and professional training to community and professional leaders in the poorest countries in these regions. "Inspiring Women" programs - in healthcare, journalism, law, education, and politics - build the local capacity of men and women to manage challenges that seriously comprise the quality of life for women, and their families, in these countries. Instead of applying a temporary patch for a particular problem, Bridges' train the trainer approach institutes real and long term change by empowering individuals to inspire communities. We work in countries with staggering infant and maternal mortality rates. Our teamwork trainers, doctors, nurses and midwives work with local healthcare teams to imbed practices to reduce infant and maternal mortality rates. Our media and leadership experts work with local journalists to enhance their ability to give voice to local women in the media. We motivate and enable local journalists to share meaningful stories about women in their communities, and even partner to create documentaries. Countries like Yemen have disparate opportunities in their legal systems, limiting women from practicing or even appearing before a court. Our legal and ethics trainers work with local lawyers and judges to improve female access to careers and access to justice Our education experts work with local teachers to operationalize learner focused education strategies. Improving early level education is a critical step in alleviating poverty.
