Me in Brief

Alastair (Al) Lucas, Q.C. was appointed Interim President of the Sheldon Chumir Foundation for Ethics in Leadership on April 1, 2012.

Al holds arts and law degrees from the University of Alberta and a Master of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia. He has been a member of the Alberta Bar since 1968.

Al has been a law professor since 1968, first at the University of British Columbia and since 1976 at the University of Calgary, where he was a founding member of the Faculty and served as Dean from 2006-2011. He is also an Adjunct Professor on the U of C's Faculty of Environmental Design. His teaching includes constitutional and administrative law, legislation and a variety of environmental and natural resources courses. His scholarship has been primarily in administrative and environmental law; particularly public participation in regulatory decision making.

Al was General Counsel for the Canadian Arctic Resources Committee, leading CARC's intervention in the Mackenzie Valley Pipeline (Berger) Inquiry in the mid-1970s, and later its President. Other organizations with which he has been actively involved include the Environmental Law Centre (Edmonton), where he was a founding Director, and the Canadian Institute of Resources Law, for which he served as Executive Director.

Al's policy and government experience includes serving as a Policy Adviser at Environment Canada, Special Legal Advisor to the North American Commission on Environmental Cooperation, and work with the Alberta Environmental Appeals and Energy Resources Conservation Boards.

Al's international activity has been in environmental law, particularly teaching in University of Calgary graduate programs on Urban Environmental Management in Thailand and Sustainable Energy and Environment in Quito, Ecuador.

Al has received many awards including the University of Calgary's President's Internationalization Achievement Award and the Law Society of Alberta/Canadian Bar Association Distinguished Service Award for Legal Scholarship.
